Day 16 - Jan22
By now we knew the airport well (at least we thought we did)so we had no trouble locating our flight to Victoria Falls. We were now going to Zimbabwe so immigration and customs needed to be dealt with. No problem - they "live" on tourists. Someone said "No Vic Falls - No Zimbabwe" . The first sighting was from the plane circling to land. Just a large cloud of mist over the jungle but thrilling just the same. Checked into the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge so called because in front of the lodge, about 300 yds down the hill, is a water hole. From my room I could watch buffalo, baboons, impala, elephants and numerous birds come to drink. I thought we were back at Mala Mala. Unpacked and went immediately to the falls. Busses go hourly from all the hotels in a loop so you can get on and off as necessary. I cannot adequately describe the falls proper except to describe how the water from the Zambezi River falls into a gorge 300+ feet deep, and about the same wide, across a lip that is over a mile long. At full flow 500 million liters (17.6 cubic feet) per minute drops into the gorge. The river below flows both ways to the middle where it exits through another gorge which snakes back an forth for about 5 miles before becoming a normal river again. Back to the hotel for a "plain" dinner and early bed.
Her are some pictures of the falls.
