Day 15 - Jan21
Early game watch as before. This morning was specially "fresh" and tracks were everywhere. It wasn't long before we got word via radio that another vehicle had located a lion kill. We left our planned route to go see, and what a sight we saw. 14 lions had captured a cape buffalo the night before and were now so stuffed that most of them were flaked out around the remains of the beast gasping for breath. Looked just like the family after Thanksgiving Dinner. We were told that they wouldn't leave until it was all gone. Hyaenas and vultures would have taken over. Another tid bit from Rowan - almost nothing dies a natural death in the wild. It's eat and be eaten. Elephants are exempt, but nothing else. The game watch was almost over - another plane to catch - but on the was back to camp it was as if we were watching the grand finale of the fireworks display. It must have been staged. We saw zebra, impala , buffalo, giraffe, rhino, baboons, waving good by and telling us to come back. You bettcha!!! So to the plane and Joburg again. This time for over night at the Michelangelo Hotel. Big, new, brassy, classy and attached to a big mall. Dinner was in an ordinary old Italian Restaurant - boring. Actually a welcome break from all the "special" menus.
