Day 5 - Jan 11
To the small Sun City airport where we overwhelmed the baggage people with our luggage plus golf bags. Mine (golf bag) was one of the few that actually made it onto the plane. The others had to wait for later flights. That was OK since they wouldn't be needed 'till the next day. Durban was the final destination, but that required going thru Johannesburg. Arrived Durban about 3 PM and were met by a very efficient mini bus tour operator . We required 3 vehicles each towing a small trailer for baggage. Off to a section, town actually, called Umhlali and the Shortens Country House Hotel. We were now near the shore, Indian Ocean, and were informed that swimming was at your own peril and only advised in areas that had shark nets deployed. We did not swim. During the drive to the hotel we did see the first of SA's squatter areas. Thousands of makeshift shacks where hundreds of thousands "live" in the most squalid conditions. No sanitation, water, or electricity. A major problem for the country. Some effort is being made to build housing but the problem is enormous. The countryside is largely planted in sugar cane, everywhere you look. Cocktails and dinner (a fish called Kingklip) followed and then early bedtime.
