Day 1 - Jan 7
Drove to Guilford stopping on the way to see my Mother.
Met David and Angela (the trip organizers)at their house so I could leave my car there. A van arrived about 2 P.M. and took us to Kennedy. We boarded a 747 at about 6 P.M. It had a different configuration than I had seen before. Right inside the main cabin door in the mid section of the aircraft was a staircase to the upper deck. That is where our seats were. I had always thought that 1st class was up there. There were about 60 seats, sort of our own little world. The really neat thing was a ledge under the window next to my seat. Actually it was a small storage bin and made access to my "stuff" very convenient . Since this was to be "home" for the next 18 hours, access to "stuff" was essential. Slippers, glasses, books, Advil, water, pillow etc. The plane landed at the CapeVerde Islands and while a couple of people did get off and on it was mostly for fuel. Middle of the night and the airport and it's "duty free shop" was not worth bothering with. Did manage to get some sleep using one of those blow up neck pillows. Highly recommended for that sort of long flight. Don't know exactly when the date changed as SA is 7 hours ahead of NY, so will call this day 1 and stop here
